In addition to making furniture we offer a carpentry and building service.
Over the last few months our work has included:
1. The creation of a four bedroomed flat from former storage space above a post
office near the centre of Bristol. This long job was technically challenging as the renovation had to meet the latest
building regulations within a Victorian building.
As well as providing the highest thermal insulation we also
had to install sound insulation between the flat and the post office
below. All floor boards and skirting boards were ripped out and the floor level increased by 70mm (almost 3 inches).
The success of the work was tested just prior to the central heating being
commissioned. After a very cold and frosty night, our client went into the hitherto unheated flat early in the morning and
found that the temperature inside the flat was a very comfortable 18 degrees C. A combination of intelligent K-glass in the
new windows, and care in the installation of thermal insulation on all exterior walls, floors and ceilings means that the
new residents will have much lower heating bills.
2. Repairing a roof with 3 sets of slightly different tiles which had been
troublesome for many years on a 18th century house in Bradford on Avon. A combination of several factors - a leaking lead
lined gulley, weather damaged stone walls over 60 cm thick, rotting timbers and previous attempts by other builders - all
needed resolving for a successful outcome. Now for the first time, a previously damp ceiling can decorated and the recycled
oak floor we laid can be enjoyed in comfort.
3. The bathroom in a miner's cottage in Clutton faces north and the solid brick wall meant that
it remained cold, damp and uninviting. The outer walls were insulated, all plumbing relocated, rotting floor joists replaced
(a history of leaking) and under floor heating installed. And the result ? - bathroom bliss and a happy client.
4. A third floor flat in Clifton, Bristol was
short of space. Collaborating with Building Control, we arrived at the solution of extending the floor area over and
above a grand stairwell by building a lined timber wall suspended between solid walls. The result meant that light levels
were retained and the extra square footage allowed us to build wardrobes and shelving. Now the residents have a bigger
flat and very useful extra storage.
